Remember the scene when Luke crashes on Dagobah, and discovers Yoda to begin his Jedi training? Those early scenes introduced Yoda’s pivotal character, providing the most memorable scenes in the series. Luke’s a rather young and raw recruit; as the pair walk around training, they find themselves near a cave, which Luke feels strange about. Yoda, of course, knows what it is.
That place… is strong with the dark side of the Force. A domain of evil it is. In you must go.
What’s in there?
Only what you take with you.
Yoda knows reality; Luke’s physical weapons won’t help him. What Luke counted on: blasters, weapons, and physical ability. What he needed: learn the way the world really works.
Luke had to learn the basic rule: you’ve got what you’ve got. Whether you’re prepared or not, ready or not, when serious social occasions pop up, you must handle them as you are — the time for preparation is over.
As an untrained rookie, Luke bumbles through the test, and in his haste, abandoned his training — a foolish decision causing problems later.
Worse, what he thought prepared him (blasters) served no purpose. Reality is … well … real. Too many people replace what works with worthless trinkets, replacing real tools with snake oil. Social justice, scholarship, modernizing the Bible … the dark side are those. Remember, truth is truth whether it’s popular or not, or believed or not.
Luke: I don’t believe it.
Yoda: That is why you fail.
To make it through, you must cast aside what doesn’t help, and pick up what does. Sadly, many people have those two lists backwards, because they fail to understand (as Yoda did) what really works, and what really equips you to respond.
What must we learn?
- When entering the cave, you’ve got what you’ve got.
- Preparation ends when trials come. You’re either ready or not.
- Even a little training provides advantages.
- Training never ends. You can always learn more.
Want to be prepared, do you? Begin now, you must. A plan to begin, is critical.
You will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy. We must be cautious.
