The Gospel Series Part 7d

JOURNEY TO JERUSALEM FOR THE FEAST OF TABERNACLES (BOOTHS)

Ridicule by the Lord's half-brothers (Jn 7:2-9)

Jn 7:2-4 Prove who you are is the idea.

Jn 7:5 They don't believe until later, at least two of them. Both James and Jude write a book of the New Testament.

Journey through Samaria (Lk 9:51-56)

Lk 9:53 Recall from John chapter 4 Samaria had their own temple. By leaving for Jerusalem, Jesus is authenticating the temple in Jerusalem as the correct one. This would not have set well with the Samaritan people.

Lk 9:54 The sons of thunder want to call fire down from heaven to consume them. They don't understand why the Samaritans are not judged. Why do they seem to get away with it? A common problem we face today is why do the evil prosper? Are they getting away with their evilness? Where is judgement? Rest assured, they are not getting away with it.

Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. (Galatians 6:7-8)

It's easy to misunderstand God's longsuffering and patience for apathy, or worse, approval of our actions. But God will ultimately judge those who are doing wrong.

Lk 9:55 It's his goal to grow us. Jesus saw not what they were then, but what they would become. John is the apostle of love, but he didn't seem to know it here.

Complete commitment required of followers (Mt 8:19-22, Lk 9:57-62)

Lk 9:59 His father wasn't dead, it's a way of saying they want the inheritance first.

Lk 9:62 If you look back, you'll create wavy plowing. We must be focused on our work.

The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. (2 Peter 3:9 KJV)
