Tim Tebow stirred up some controversy without doing much, just by living his life as he likely always has. As always, you’re free to ignore him if you wish … to paraphrase the (in)famous pro-abortion saying “Don’t like Tebow? Then don’t watch him”.
It only gets worse the more he wins. Atheists just can’t stand it — but that’s not the problem, as atheists exude such a fear of God they go to great lengths to stomp out any mention or idea of religion — that’s nothing new.
No, the problem is some “Christians” march in lock-step with god-fearing atheists.
“It seems Tebow might help himself and the kingdom by getting off his knees, taking the verses off of his face, and being faithful to Christ without the public acts like all the other Christians in the NFL have done for decades,” wrote Anthony Bradley, an associate professor of theology and ethics at The Kings College in New York City, in World Magazine.
In other words, Tebow, get back in the closet! We don’t want to see—gasp!—prayer (just sex, drugs, and well… you know the rest). Why is kneeling in prayer so offensive, but corrupt, vile, and illegal activities acceptable? Can you say misplaced priorities? In other words, slouching toward Gomorrah.
Sadly, the professor missed Paul teaching his protégé Timothy:
I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. (2 Timothy 4:1–2 NKJV)
Many translations miss the Greek a bit, as Walter Martin relates it really means whether it’s convenient or inconvenient. Tebow might help himself by hiding his religion, but he wouldn’t be faithful to Christ — what was that about hiding a light again? Too many Christians are stealthy, working undercover.
Nobody doubts Tebow’s position — whether they agree with him or want to silence him.
Recall Daniel in chapter six when his enemies set a trap — wanting him to stop something he’d always done: pray. Daniel knew they were out to get him, so what does he do? Hide? Change his routine? Nope — he continued to do as he always did.
Now when Daniel knew that the writing was signed, he went into his house; and his windows being open in his chamber toward Jerusalem, he kneeled upon his knees three times a day, and prayed, and gave thanks before his God, as he did aforetime. (Daniel 6:10)
Daniel neither shrank in fear, nor called attention to himself. He simply continued the same routine he’d always done — whether people watched or not, whether they made a big deal of it or not. The media and others make a big deal about Tebow — actions he’s likely done quietly and unnoticed for a long time.
Of course, Paul didn’t tell Timothy to be a jerk in preaching the Word, and you shouldn’t be either. Preach the Word, but if someone doesn’t want to hear it, move on — you’ve done your job, their response to truth is their decision.
Son of man, I have made thee a watchman unto the house of Israel: therefore hear the word at my mouth, and give them warning from me. (Ezekiel 3:17)
Shootings, beatings, drugs, thuggery, sleaze — all are welcomed, but prayer? Outrage! It must stop! After all, we’ve got to get back to celebrating debauchery!
Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope. (Isaiah 5:18)
