Is Political Protesting Spiritual?

| Comments

It’s no surprise Jim Wallis’ radical group Sojourners doesn’t like the Tea-Party (Wallis calls the Tea-Party un-Christian), but loves the “Occupy” protesters. On the blog the question arose, is the Occupy protest spiritual? The opinion from Wallis’ Sojourners certainly isn’t surprising.

OccupyWallStreet was not birthed by the church, but our scriptures tell us that it is certainly a spiritual movement.

Examine what’s going on in the “Occupy” protests, and compare that behavior to what we know is spiritual, then each person can decide for themselves if the previous statement from Sojourners makes any sense at all.

Paul identified some characteristics of the flesh versus the spirit in Galatians five:

Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like…

while spiritual is:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control

Examine what’s going on in the protest movement and see which list their actions line up on. We’ll not list specifics because some articles can be non-family friendly, but Google searches reveal the following reports:

  • Drug Use.
  • Various adulterous acts.
  • Thousands of arrests.
  • Vandalism, graffiti, and destruction of property.
  • Demands for handouts paid by others.
  • Attacks on police.
  • Anarchy and chaos.
  • Attacking vendors for not giving them free food.
  • Pooping on a police car.

Ask yourself, which list does the reported behavior appear on? Do those acts appear spiritual according to the Bible?

When Sojourners claims the “scriptures tell us that it is certainly a spiritual movement”, they’re definitely not referring to the Bible — perhaps their scripture is Alinsky’s “Rules for Radicals”. You can be for or against the people, ideas, and goals of the “occupy” movement, but calling it Biblically spiritual is laughably absurd (calling it a “Holy Spirit moment” reveals a complete lack of understanding also).

Since Sojourners exists as an extreme far-left political movement, it’s no surprise they see what they want — as we’ve noted before, social justice is a counterfeit gospel having no Biblical support. Not even a shred. Zero. Zilch. Nada.

Calling lawlessness, attacks, and mob mentality a “Holy Spirit moment” is worse.

To answer whether the occupy everything is a spiritual movement simply consider which list from Galatians five the actions appear on, then wonder what scriptures Sojourners could be referring to, because it unquestionably isn’t the Bible, leading to unanswered questions for Jim Wallis and Sojourners:

  • What alternate scripture are you reading which state such acts are acceptable (or worse, spiritual)?
  • How can you justify such actions against innocent people?
  • Does the end justify almost any means (an idea out of Alinsky’s playbook by the way — a book dedicated to Satan).
  • Do Alinsky tactics take precedence over the Bible? (they must believe they do, whether they admit it or not).

How can Jim Wallis’ Sojourners justify such behavior? We’ll dive into the conflicting ideology behind the claim next week, it’s something you must understand to identify the heresy-of-the-week and the latest fads sweeping the church.
