Connecting the News Dots

| Comments

On occasion different news stores appear unrelated, but turn out connected. Let’s connect the dots and see what turns out. The first story comes from Florida Democrat Alan Grayson (who’s 15 minutes appears to be about up) on his latest media-grabbing statement — only this time, (almost) everyone agrees his ship isn’t firmly tied to the pier.

Republicans and Democrats slammed Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) for calling Linda Robertson, an adviser to Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, a “K Street whore” in a month-old radio interview that circulated on Capitol Hill Monday night.

“There’s no call for that language. No call for it. That’s absurd. If he was standing here now, I’d say that to him,” said Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.)

“He’s out of control,” added Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, who is vice chairwoman of the House Republican Conference.

“Is this news to you that this guy’s one fry short of a Happy Meal?” asked Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.)

Out of control politicians aren’t new. But notice the complete lack of civility in his statements, and the fact that up until now many of the absurdities have gone relatively unchallenged — many in Congress just accepted his uncivilized attacks as a part of the system.

But that’s dangerous, as we get to news item number two:

Police in Richmond, Calif., believe that more than a dozen people may have either watched or participated in a vicious rape of a 15-year-old Richmond High School girl that lasted for more than two hours.

ABC’s San Francisco affiliate KGO reported today that police have arrested two suspected rapists, but believe between four and seven people could have participated while as many as a dozen stood and watched.

Notice how the two are connected? When the hallowed halls of Congress do little or nothing about one of their own making personal attacks, it’s just a small trip down slippery slope lane until you get to news story number two.

Shocked? Not at all — it’s just a logical extension of what we see every day from politicians and others excusing such subhuman behavior. It’s one thing to disagree on health-care, welfare, taxes, and so on, but disagreement should be civilized — a thought lost on Mr. Grayson. Perhaps he lacks ability to express himself without nasty attacks, but at least he could have his staff prepare remarks for him if he can’t speak without nastiness — it’s his duty as a representative in the United States Congress.

For those bizarre readers who infer something which doesn’t exist, we’re not blaming Mr. Grayson for what happened in Richmond, just noting he is but one current example of disgusting actions by people who should exemplify proper decorum and behavior, while society wonders how the people in story number two could act the way they do.

Simple — they’ve been shown the way by people who should be role models, and are, whether they want to be (or think they are) or not. Value relativism, it’s-all-about-me and other degradation are the outcome when you lose your moral compass, and people who should be held up as role models lead the charge to depraved actions.

We’re getting the society we deserve as we race passed slouching towards Gomorrah to openly embrace the “anything goes” and “if it feels good do it” philosophy, and now find ourselves surrounded by an ideology we can no longer control.

Why then are we shocked when that ideology gives us the results it does?
